“And so it begins…”

Welcome to my blog. My very first blog. It’s hard for me to believe. I’ve been haunting the internet for a good sixteen years. I’ve been mouthing off to anybody and everybody with eyes to read. I’ve been banned from multiple message boards and yet…

Yet, I’ve never had my own blog.

Well I do now and I’m going to take advantage of the opportunity to say…

“I’m sorry!”

Yeah, I admit it’s a weird way to start off a blog by apologizing for it but that’s me.

Seriously though, I’m apologizing to those of you who bought one of my new books and saw my blog’s web address in it and decided to visit, only to find that it was designated private. Invitation only. Stay the hell out. Beware of dog. No solicitors. Yadda, yadda, blah!

Nothing like being invited and then having the host urinate on you just because you’re knocking on their door. Well I’ll try to explain myself. When I was publishing my book I wanted a place where my readers could come and meet me and maybe exchange some ideas. The problem was that I had intended my books to be published at Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com and Smashwords.com, simultaneously.

That of course did not happen.

Amazon and Smashwords were a snap to set up accounts with. Barnes & Noble was a royal pain in the keister. I gave them all the same info that I gave the other two distributors, but B&N were having problems  verifying information and I had to keep calling them and updating my info on their PubIt! site, until finally I was authorized to go live.

One friggin week later.

And so it was, that I delayed the launch of my blog until I had my distributors set up, all in a pleasant little row.

Now I’m going to stop bitching about B&N. I’m annoyed with them but I also appreciate them. Just like I appreciate Amazon and Smashwords. They’ve given me and all other writers out there a wonderful opportunity. The chance to go straight from writing a book to distributing the book without the middle men and the bullshit. Yeah, publishing houses and agents are fine and dandy but…

An instant audience without all the hassle is nice. I’ve been published professionally before and it was one of the greatest rushes of my life. I worked hard on my first book, hoping to get it professionally published, was prepared to spend the next few years of my life shopping it to agents and editors and publishers and…

I saw the light. And the light was good.

Dean Wesley Smith was that light. He was my editor on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds IX and he was truly wonderful. The help and the advice he gave me when I needed it informs the way I write stories to this day. But the advice I got just from reading his wonderful blog a few months back, now informs my approach to publishing and will, probably for the rest of my life.

I’m not going to recap the advice from his blog, mainly because I’ll screw it up, but if you’re planning on becoming a writer you should read it yourself. It’s smart, common sense advice coming from a man who’s been publishing for the last 36 years. Trust me, he knows what he’s talking about.

As for what I’m talking about… Who knows? It’s late. My brain is fried. Right now I’m about to toddle off to bed but I wanted to end my first ever blog entry by posting some information on my first ever novel: Star Force.
